Question?

Can any local piano teach me how to play Contemporary Christian, Gospel, Pop, R&B or Jazz?

Answer

My desire to play gospel music started at the early age of 6 years old. At that time we couldn’t afford a piano. It wasn’t until I was in the seventh grade that my mother purchased my first instrument. It was a Wurlitzer spinet. I can’t event began to tell you how excited I was. I thought all my problems were over.

She signed me up with the city’s most well known piano teacher and in my opinion a gospel music legend.  I was on my way to becoming the next gospel superstar in my hometown.

I studied piano with this lady from the 7th to the 12th grade. Not one time did she teach me a lick of gospel, not even a hymn. I had become a really good classical pianist but I wanted more.

After graduating for high school I knew when I enrolled in college as music major, this institution for higher leaning would teach me everything I ever wanted to know about playing gospel music. I was under the assumption that college music professors could do it all. Four years later and a plethora of music teachers, I received a degree and to my dismay gospel music was never a requirement.

The avenues that I went through to learn gospel were not very conventional. I do recall paying a few musicians to teach me gospel, but believe me when I tell you this, they were only musicians and far from being a gospel music educator.

The quest to find quality contemporary piano instructor even to this day is almost non-existent. In order to play contemporary music you must be exposed to the “creative element” used in contemporary music. These are all those fancy tricks, chords progressions, runs and fills associated with contemporary music. The so-called secrets that musicians refuse to share.

So to answer your question, NO! All music teachers aren’t created equal.

A Little About Me

I’m not just a musician I’M AN EDUCATOR. I have a Masters of Music degree and I’ve dedicated my life to training musicians all over the world. I’m educated in comprehensive music theory, classical piano, gospel, Contemporary Christian, jazz, R&B and pop music styles. I not only know how to teach contemporary keyboard styles but I thoroughly make sure that you understand the theoretical application of the music.
